Demon's Blood
A downloadable game
This game is a submission for the Horror Jam of the 2020 PIGSquad Summer Slow Jams. Note that the project is incomplete and the screenshot is a mock-up of what the finished product might look like. While I ultimately did not have time to make this game for the jam, I enjoyed creating the assets for the game screen mock-up, and I think it would be fun to make a game like this in the future when the time and energy is available to me.
The theme of the game jam is Horror, but I have a soft spot for horror games that don't actually frighten the player--Specifically, the type of games that romanticize the horror genre, portraying the creatures of the night as a force to be reckoned with rather than a force to be feared. Many games from the '90s and early 2000's fell into this genre (the most obvious being Castlevania), using Gothic horror as a sub-genre for hack-and-slash combat. That being said, these games are still horror games in their own right, so I wanted to create a game that paid homage to that genre.
In Demon's Blood, you play as Randiel, a demon hunter who possesses a demonic arcane power of his own. In observance of the game jam's creative theme, "Don't let it out," Randiel must fight to control the demon inside of him whilst he hunts his prey. Randiel's demonic powers grant him the ability to use powerful magic, but straining the limit of his abilities will cause him to lose control and let the demon out. When this happens, he transforms into a demon, losing control of his mind and body and causing terrible destruction for a short period of time. Afterwards, his body is left in a powerless, destitute state. The player must manage their Demon Gauge carefully to ensure this does not happen, although players may also discover that Randiel's demon form can help them out of a dire situation... but at what cost?
